Stadt und Land
STADT UND LAND (SUL) is a german housing company based in Berlin. The company manages 63.417 objects in Berlin with 696 employees. Since 1924 STADT UND LAND is a state-owned cmpany of the state of
Berlin (100%).
Social responsibility is the company’s watchword. Its declared aim is to provide affordable housing for a wide spectrum of the population. Between the 60’s and 80’s, STADT UND LAND built about 3,300 dwelling units in Tempelhof and Neukölln and further 1,921 flats on the Rollberg estate in Neukölln also.
Following the re-unification of Berlin in 1989, STADT UND LAND purchased the East Berlin Wohnungsbau-Gesellschaft Treptow mbH, which led to the merger of both housing companies in 1995.
The newly formed association built about 2,400 dwelling units, and landscaped some 100,000 m² of public land in Altglienicke in the south of Berlin. STADT UND LAND purchased in 1999 the East Berlin Wohnungsbaugesellschaft Hellersdorf mbH, which has lead to the merger of both housing companies in 2002. The newly formed association manages about 63.000 objects in Berlin. STADT UND LAND have ambitious goals concerning environmental protection.
The company has been in the year 2005 the first state-owned housing company in Germany and the fifth European housing company to be registered in the EMAS-Register (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme). An EMAS accredited verifier has validated the implementation of the environment management system and the public environmental statement of STADT UND LAND.
The company is allowed now to use the EMAS-Logo. The rotation for the validation goes over four years, STADT UND LAND has succesfully accomplished a first moniroting audit in the year 2006 and in this year a second monitoring will be realised.
The company has a decentral organisation, so that the aim is to validate each location. Another consequence of the validation is the publication of the commitment of STADT UND LAND, a broad public will take account of the aims of the company.
Several Projects have preceded the validation like the ‘climatic bet’ of our apprentices in connection with an action of the European Youth and the EEC as well as the participation at Ökoprofit projects of the Land Berlin.
With the introduction of the environmental management system STADT UND LAND has settled organisational forms and rules in order to control the consumption of resources, like energy and paper and as a consequence reduce the costs of administration.
The environmental commitment aims in particular at the core business, the letting and administration of dwellings.
The building and operation of solar plants, the waste management, reorganisation of thermal insulation and the use of adequate material serve also an increasing satisfaction with the housing conditions.
The fact that environmental protection and economics do not exclude themselves will be clear for the tenant when he receives its consumption data.
The participation of STADT AND LAND to the project SAVE@work4homes is the consequently continuation of the environmental policy of the company.
